All Motor Vehicle Passengers in NYS Must Now Wear Seat Belts in Front and Back Seats

Recently, Governor Cuomo signed new legislation that mandates all individuals who are over 16 years old to wear seatbelts, even in the backseat. In past years, if you were at least 16 years of age, wearing a seat belt in the backseat was not mandatory, however, now, with the new law in place, all motorists and their passengers are required to wear seatbelts at all times.

Of the new legislation, Governor Cuomo said in a statement, “We’ve known for decades that seat belts save lives and with this measure we are further strengthening our laws and helping to prevent needless tragedies. It was under my father’s leadership that New York became the first state in the country to pass a seat belt law, and the nation followed his lead. Now we are building upon this legacy and helping to create a safer and stronger Empire State for all.”

The new law is set to take effect on November 1, and if you or your passengers are caught disobeying the law, you can expect fines or even points on your license. Assembly Member Walter Mosely said, in response to the law, “Seatbelts are a proven way to make our roads safer and lower the number of automobile fatalities. This legislation will go a long way towards achieving that goal and ensuring that all passengers are safe when traveling. I thank Governor Cuomo for signing this bill into law and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our state.”
